Medford is also centrally located to
recreational areas such as Oregon Caves National Monument, Crater Lake and the
Rogue River Valley. Within an 80-mile radius of Medford are 153 stocked fishing
streams, 17 lakes, boating and fishing on the Rogue River, plus hunting and
camping in 56 forest camps. The Upper and Lower Table Rocks (giant
sandstone-basaltic mesas with lava caps) are 10 miles northeast of Medford.
There are also trailheads off of Table Rock Road where hikers can take the
2-mile trail to the top of Lower Table Rock. The incredible view includes the
Rogue River, Siskyou Mountains and Medford. There is also a steeper mile-long
trail to Upper Table Rock. The 2 mesas are part of land purchased by the Nature
Conservancy and designated as a preserve, which is now managed by the Bureau of
Land Management. Crater Lake National Park is one of the country's crown jewels.
No place else on earth combines a deep pure blue lake with sheer surrounding
cliffs almost 2,000 feet high plus a picturesque island and a violent volcanic
past.
The parks and recreation department also operates 18 developed parks
around the county that provide the opportunity for enjoyment of
outdoors recreational activities. |
